We all have been in stores and restaurants where some type of music is playing in the background. Sometimes we like it and sometimes we don’t. So, how do you go about choosing the right business music for your company?
Go With What You Like -Not
As the owner of the company, you are your company’s brand. However, that does not mean that your taste in music is the best option for your company. Many business owners make the mistake in assuming that just because their favorite music makes them energetic and happy, that it will have the same effect on others. If you still feel that your choice of music is still the best option for your company, take a moment to get another opinion. You do not want to make a rookie mistake.
Does your music match your target customer? For example, are you targeting teens but playing classical music? This may not be the best match for your target audience. Is your target customer more in the age range of baby boomers? Play classic rock and other music
from their area. In other words, play the music that your target audience will most likely know.
Not only does the genre of music matter, so does the tempo. The slower the tempo, the slower your customers will go. The faster the tempo, the faster your customers will go. If you own a retail shop, you are going to want music that contains a slower tempo. This will keep customers from moving rapidly through the store. Instead, they are likely to slow down, look around more, and spend more money.
Do not forget to ask the people who have to listen to the music day in and day out what they think of the music. If they do not like it, they are less likely to be happy and productive. That does not mean that you will be able to appease everyone’s taste in music. However, if the general consensus is that the music is bad, most likely it is.
Music speaks louder than business owners realize. The right type of music can set the mood for profit, and after all that is the main goal.
